As the humanitarian crisis in Syria grows, the NDP is urging the Conservative government to match individual charitable donations made by Canadians and to work with the UN to direct aid to the most vulnerable populations.
“We’re calling on the Conservative government to step up efforts to make sure that those who need help most are actually getting it,” said Official Opposition Foreign Affairs critic Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre). “The NDP also joins aid groups in calling for the Canadian government to match individual Canadians’ charitable donations.”
The UN Security Council has also urged the Syrian government to allow greater aid access. NDP MPs wrote to the Foreign Affairs Minister last month urging him to ensure that disadvantaged groups like women and ethnic minorities receive aid. Humanitarian relief is also desperately needed in areas where thousands of civilians have been cut off from assistance for months.
“The situation in Syria is critical and while humanitarian assistance is key, the Conservatives must also step up diplomatic efforts towards an eventual ceasefire,” said NDP International Development critic Hélène Laverdière (Laurier – Sainte-Marie).
