AG report: a wake up call for the government

OTTAWA – Today’s Auditor General Report revealed that once again departmental inefficiencies within the Federal Government are failing Canadians. The report highlights many problems that, as the Auditor points out have been raised in the past but are getting worse, including no up-to-date regulatory framework for passenger vehicle safety which puts Canadians lives at risk and recruitment issues within the Canadian forces specifically for female candidates.

“We are not surprised to see how badly the Conservatives mismanaged important files. What is more concerning is that some of these issues are actually getting worse, I am particularly concerned to learn that it can take up to 10 years for Transport Canada to update regulatory framework for passenger vehicle safety. Canadians are literally putting their lives at risk every time they drive their car,” said NDP MP David Christopherson (Hamilton Centre).

The report also highlights more mismanagement of taxpayers’ dollars. For example we have no way to know what the $ 1.1 billion dollar Beyond the Border Action Plan actually achieved, we have seen chronic delays for Income Tax Objections and for accessing culturally appropriate rehabilitation programs for Indigenous offenders, mismanagement of First Nations specific claims, mismanagement of operating and maintenance support for military equipment and significant deficiencies with the Atlantic Pilotage Authority.

“For a party that liked to brand themselves as prudent fiscal managers, we see that the Conservatives actually have mismanaged billions of taxpayers’ dollars. This is a wakeup call for the Liberal government to act and provide services built around citizens instead of process as the Auditor general rightly points out,” added NDP Infrastructure and Communities critic Matthew Dubé (Beloeil-Chambly). “We need a government that will fight for you and me.”
