Liberals keep Harper agenda on track

Less than two months on the job and Michael Ignatieff is already picking up where Stéphane Dion left off.

Michael Ignatieff says he’s opposed to Stephen Harper’s Conservative agenda. He claims to have the Harper government on probation, but the reality is that for 16 months Conservatives have been happily governing with Liberal MPs at their side.

Today, Liberal MPs voted for the 50th time to keep the Harper agenda on track – rubber-stamping a Conservative budget that fails to protect the most vulnerable in our struggling economy.

With the support of Liberal MPs, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have:

  • Ended our global commitments to the Kyoto climate change treaty
  • Stolen $55 billion in employee contributions to the Employment Insurance fund
  • Extended Canada’s military role in Afghanistan until 2011
  • Changed the Immigration Act – giving the Minister powers to treat immigration applicants unfairly
  • Passed another budget that doesn’t help out-of-work Canadians struggling to get the EI they’ve paid for, and forever prevents women from seeking pay equity in the courts.

Ignatieff’s Liberals can’t have it both ways. They can’t say they are opposed to Harper’s agenda and do nothing to stop it.

Stephen Harper’s agenda is a real threat to ordinary families. It deserves real opposition. The real opposition is Jack Layton’s New Democrat Opposition.

You can count on New Democrats to fight for you and your family, between elections as well as during them - each and every day.
