- Served on many public bodies, ranging from transportation policy, occupational health and safety, and employment standards
- 25 years of activism in social justice causes – peace, poverty and international development
- Past Chair, Mount Pleasant Parent Advisory Council, and current Director, Meridian Cultural Society, providing public space for child care, church and cultural events
- Active in community organizations, including Tools for Peace, Co-op Radio, Lawyers for Social Responsibility, La Quena Cooperative, Dickens Community Group and hockey coach
- Long-time resident in Kensington area of Vancouver Kingsway
- Married for 24 years to Sheryl Palm, a Speech Pathologist at BC Children's Hospital. They have 3 children and a yellow Labrador retriever
